Contact stopped

The woman Sam had travelled to see was Arzuaga. His family last heard from him on January 1, 2025, and filed a missing-person report on February 9.

The search became a homicide investigation. Contemporary reporting described police searching the motel where he had been staying and initially charging five people with murder. At that stage, those charges were allegations; the later guilty pleas and sentences are separate developments.

The message read at sentencing

At the September hearing, prosecutors put some evidence on the record even though the two defendants would not face a trial. Spectrum reported that a prosecutor read a message from Arzuaga saying Sam could not leave New York alive. The relationship that brought him there was now being examined through evidence of his captivity and killing.

Sam's mother remembered his capacity for love and his wish to make others feel accepted. Her account gives him a place in the story beyond the offences committed against him.

His sister also described an unresolved fear: guilty pleas established responsibility, but might leave the family without a full account of what happened. A sentence does not necessarily answer every question.

Understanding the outcome

Other defendants' cases were at different stages in September; these two sentences did not resolve the entire prosecution.

For practical context, our guides explain phone lookup limits and dating-profile photo checks. Identifying an account cannot establish how someone will behave, and this case does not show that a consumer search would have prevented Sam's death.
